I still can't believe that I finally did it!!! After two whole years of 'umming & arhhhing' and finding all sorts of excuses and reasons for putting it off, I have finally got round to buying myself a brand new computer. I actually ordered it on Friday - I'm still in shock even now - and it should be here by next Monday.
"But, David... why all of the amateur dramatics?" I hear you ask and now I will tell you.
Anyone that knows me well, also knows that I always replace my computers every three years, without fail, no matter what condition they might be in. That's just how I roll...
However, me and the last computer that I bought in 2003 - a top of the range, very high-spec Medion which cost me over £1000 just for the tower alone - have become very much in love.
I know it sounds stupid, but this good ol' girl of mine - the Medion computer who I've named Brenda - has never once let me down, played up in any way or caused me any other problems what-so-ever in the five long years that we've been together.
She is, without a shadow of a doubt, the very best and most reliable computer that I have ever owned.
In March of 2005, when I would've normally replaced any other computer, I just couldn't bring myself to say goodbye to Brenda. Even now, two years on from what should have been her funeral, she's still very much alive and kicking and could even give a top-range computer of today a good run for it's money.
But alas, after many happy years together, I realize that she must now move aside to make room for a new, younger and sportier model to be a part of my life.
Hey... I'm a bloke... what else did you expect!
And here, in the picture below, is my new bit of stuff, who I am now longing to run my sticky little fingers all over. It won't be long now, my precious...
Hey, everybody... isn't she just absolutely adorable, with her young, pert sockets and curvasious disk-drives! Anyway, here are my new girl's vital statistics, which really are very impressive:
- Processor: Dual Core AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+
- Memory: 2Gb DDR2 RAM (with plenty of room for expansion)
- Storage: 1Tb hard disk drive (yes, I said 1 Terrabyte... which is 1000 Gigabytes)
- Media Writer: DVD +/- RW dual layer with Lightscribe
- Graphics: 2x 512Mb PCI-E Nvidia GeForce 8400 (I did say 2x graphics cards, count them both)
- Sound: Edifier 5.1 with 6-piece speaker set and subwoofer
- Display: 22in TFT LCD monitor with 8ms response rate
- Removable Media: 52 in 1 card reader
- Operating System: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium
- Extras: Also comes bundled with the latest, most popular software programs
As you can imagine, I am all a quiver with excitement and can't wait for that knock on the door when the new girl arrives. I know that we will instantly hit it off and get it on from day one.
Amidst all of this wanton lust for more power and stunning visuals, though, I just can't help wondering whether this new attraction of mine will stand up to the tests of time as well as my old girl Brenda did. Given the chance, and if I continued to lavish my love and affection on her, Brenda could probably go on making me happy and giving me enjoyment for a few more years yet.
On the day that my new young filly arrives, will I really be able to unplug Brenda and banish her to the living room, to be used and abused by my missus and the kids. I really, really don't know if I can... or even if want to!
Perhaps me, Brenda and the new girl can all work closely together in my upstairs office, side by side... and maybe even the two of them will become very good friends... and perhaps, if I play my cards just right... perhaps the three of us... if I'm very, very lucky...
Nah... what am I thinking!!! That sort of thing only ever happens to those guys you see in the porn films.
I'm off out to buy a take-away now, so catch you all later...
