    Personally, I am a sucker for 'Beta testing', mainly because of my web-designer/developer background.
    
    I like to help discover all of the bugs in a new website or web application and also find all the little tweaks that can help to make them more useful.
    
    This knowledge puts me in a better position to offer support to others if they should run into any problems and also help the developers - like those at Blog.co.uk - improve the services for their members.
    
    'Beta testing' is not for everyone though and, like yourself, you should consider what the consequences might be before taking part.

      Well, as one who has programmed since 1978, I prefer to get paid if I am going to be finding bugs. Fixing them is even more fun, but these days, I am considered to be unemployable because of being 59, so I only get to fix ones I have made earlier...
      
      It's a shame there still isn't any interest in having people work in their homes, and firms just outsource to India instead. Ah well, it's their loss as well as mine...

        I totally agree with you, Walrus...
        
        I too was an early adapter of the new computer age and miss very much tinkering with my BBC Acorn, Commadore 64 and ZX Spectrum, though my Q-Basic is quite a bit rusty now.
        
        I was also there in the front of the queue when the internet was taken out of the sole domain of the Government and made available to the public, too.
        
        Then after many years of working in I.T. and when the out-sourcing began and all of the money started to dry up in the trade, I decided to go it alone.
        
        I retrained, read books, done courses and mostly taught myself at home the new skills that I needed to diversify into other areas.
        
        I now work from home - for myself - and though I'm earning less than what I did back then when there was big money to be made in this game, I am very, very happy now... and I consider it to be the best move I ever made.
        
        I now undertake many projects that incorporate my newly learned skills, such as Web Design/Development, Internet Marketing, SEO (search engine optimization), SEM (search engine marketing), B2B (business to business) Consultancy, Affiliate Marketing and more.
        
        What's more, even though I do all of this, I still have plenty of free-time for the finer things in my life, such as my family, socializing with my mates (usually down the pub) and my photography and other hobbies.
        
        So before you start calling yourself an 'old fart' (let me do that) and throwing yourself on the 'silicon' scrap-heap, please take a look at me and maybe see a little bit of what you can also achieve for yourself. I also hope that perhaps I can inspire and motivate you to make a fresh start... if you want to, of course.
        
        Walrus, if you'd like me to give you some info on how I got started and where I went for help, training and sources of information at the very beginning, then please send me a private message so we can strike up some correspondence.
        
        Anyway. what ever you decide, I wish you all the best and much happiness in everything that you do...

          Ah, but you would not believe how busy a chap gets, what with looking after a 12 year old child, being a house-husband and all that stuff. What with playing Myst, cooking and all, I don't think there is time for work as well...
